of the disease and interesting historical facts

Serpiginous choroiditis was first described in medical literature in the early 20th century. Since then, many studies have been devoted to the pathogenesis of this disease. For example, in 1945, a paper was published describing cases of serpiginous choroiditis against the background of systemic lupus erythematosus. An interesting fact is that for many decades, the disease remained the subject of scientific debate regarding its etiology, and only in the last 30 years have some genetic and bacterial factors contributing to its development become known.

Epidemiology

Epidemiological data on serpiginous choroiditis indicate a relatively low incidence. According to various estimates, the incidence is approximately 1-3 cases per 100,000 population per year. However, in populations with a high incidence of autoimmune diseases, this number may be significantly higher. In particular, in patients with systemic connective tissue diseases such as lupus, the incidence may reach 10%. In men and women, the incidence ratio approaches 1:1, but among young women with autoimmune diseases, the risk is increased.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Studies show that there is a certain genetic predisposition to serpiginous choroiditis. The most studied genes include HLA typing, which is associated with autoimmune diseases. It is reported that certain alleles, such as HLA-DR2 and HLA-DR3, may increase the risk of developing the disease. Also, some studies have found a link between mutations in genes responsible for the immune response and the development of inflammatory eye diseases. Uncertain mechanisms associated with genetic predisposition are still being investigated.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

Risk factors for serpiginous choroiditis include both physical and chemical factors.
