This disease leads to damage to the walls of blood vessels, which can affect both small and large vessels. As a result, there is a violation of blood circulation in the affected organs, which can lead to tissue ischemia, and sometimes to serious functional changes. Rheumatoid vasculitis is considered one of the complications of rheumatoid arthritis and manifests itself in the form of various clinical syndromes, including cutaneous, neurological and renal of the disease and interesting historical facts

The history of rheumatoid vasculitis dates back to the early 20th century, when cases were first described demonstrating a link between vascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. One of the first to contribute to the study of this condition was a physician who, in the 1940s, established a correlation between necrotizing vasculitis and rheumatoid arthritis. Over the past decades, advances in medical technology and research have allowed for a more in-depth understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease. In the 1980s, with the introduction of serologic diagnostic methods, many discoveries were made about the role of antibodies in the development of vasculitis. These historical facts highlight how our understanding of the disease has evolved and how knowledge about it has accumulated.

Epidemiology

The epidemiology of rheumatoid vasculitis demonstrates its relatively low but significant prevalence. According to various studies, the incidence is from 1% to 5% among patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This means that vasculitis can develop in a significant number of people who already suffer from the underlying disease. In most cases, vasculitis is observed in middle-aged patients, but cases have also been reported in younger and older patients. Women suffer from rheumatoid vasculitis approximately 2-3 times more often than men. Such data confirm the need for active monitoring of the risk group and the development of early diagnostic methods.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Genetic predisposition to rheumatoid vasculitis is noted due to the involvement of various genes related to the immune system. The most studied are genes in the HLA-DRB1 region, which are considered markers of predisposition to rheumatoid arthritis and, therefore, to its complications, including vasculitis. Some studies have shown that certain HLA alleles can increase the risk of developing vasculitis, as well as worsen its clinical course. In addition, there is evidence of the role of genes responsible for the production of cytokines, such as Il-6, Il-1 and TNF-alpha, which can contribute to inflammatory processes in the vessels. Identification of such genetic markers can help in early diagnosis and prevention of diseases.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

Risk factors that contribute to the development of rheumatoid vasculitis can be divided into physical, chemical and others.
