This condition can cause various clinical manifestations, the most common of which are pelvic pain, a feeling of heaviness, varicose veins of the lower extremities, and menstrual irregularities in women. The syndrome is common in young women and is associated with factors such as pregnancy, prolonged standing or sitting, and hereditary predisposition factors.

<div id="ez-toc-container" of the disease and interesting historical facts

Pelvic congestion syndrome was first described in 1975 by the Italian phlebologist G. Gradino. Research into its damaging aspects continued over the following decades, which contributed to the formation of the term "pelvic congestion syndrome". Observations show that a significant increase in the number of cases of this syndrome is associated with the growing popularity of an active lifestyle, as well as with changes in the social status of women. Surprisingly, in the history of medicine there are references to similar manifestations as early as the 19th century, when doctors paid attention to similar symptoms in women, but until the development of a modern understanding of this syndrome, it was not discussed.

Epidemiology

According to various studies, the prevalence of pelvic venous congestion syndrome ranges from 5% to 25% among women of reproductive age. It has been established that this syndrome is more often diagnosed in women who have already had a pregnancy, as well as in those who suffer from chronic diseases associated with the venous system. The incidence of cases in women with a family history of venous diseases also increases significantly. Some studies show that gender plays a key role, since this syndrome is almost never found in men.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Current research suggests that there is a genetic predisposition to pelvic congestion syndrome.
