This pathology most often appears on the conjunctiva, especially in the nasal angle of the eye and causes minor discomfort to patients. Pinguecula is formed due to the growth of fibroepithelial cells, which tend to increase in size under the influence of various external environments, such as ultraviolet radiation, dust, and chemicals. Although pinguecula itself does not cause serious diseases, it can be a source of discomfort and precede more serious diseases in some cases, such as pterygium.

<div id="ez-toc-container" of the disease and interesting historical facts

The study of pinguecula has a long history, dating back to ancient times. Ancient medical literature describes various eye tumors, but pinguecula as a separate entity was studied more closely only in the 19th century. Interestingly, over time, ideas about pinguecula have changed: if earlier it was perceived exclusively as an aesthetic problem, then in recent decades it has become clear that it serves as a marker of more global problems associated with the impact of the environment on the organs of vision. Through various biopsies and studies, it was possible to find out that pinguecula can develop both in people working in open conditions and in those who spend a lot of time in the sun, emphasizing the importance of eye protection.

Epidemiology

Pinguecula is observed in many patients worldwide. According to statistics, about 10% people over 40 years of age have this pathology. Studies show that the incidence of pinguecula increases with the age of patients and correlates with the duration of exposure to sunlight. Documented cases are most often recorded in high latitudes and in hot climates where solar radiation is intense. In some countries, such as Australia and South America, the incidence rate is significantly higher, which is probably due to the geographical location and lifestyle of residents, including active outdoor sports.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

To date, data on genetic predisposition to pinguecula remains limited. Research suggests that certain genes associated with inflammation and UV response may influence the development of this pathology. For example, mutations in genes responsible for the synthesis of collagen and other connective tissue proteins may predispose a patient to pinguecula formation. However, more research is needed to better understand the mechanism of these processes and their connection with genetics.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

Risk factors for pinguecula include both physical and chemical exposures, as well as certain lifestyles.
