This condition is largely associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and is a strong indicator of the atherosclerotic process in the body. Peripheral arteries are usually involved in the process due to the accumulation of lipids and calcium, which can worsen the quality of life, lead to leg pain, leg pain at rest, and also aggravate the situation in the event of acute arterial thrombosis. Without a doctor, it can be difficult to follow an adequate strategy for managing the disease, which makes early diagnosis and timely treatment the most important aspects of medicine.

<div of the disease and interesting historical facts

The history of peripheral arterial disease research goes back several centuries. The first mentions of symptoms characteristic of this pathology are found in the works of Hippocrates and other ancient Greek doctors, who described leg pain during physical exertion. In the 18th century, cases of limb amputations due to severe atherosclerotic changes became known, which led to a more thorough study of the disease. The use of angiography in the 1920s opened up new horizons for diagnostics, and since the end of the 20th century, interest in minimally invasive treatment methods has increased, which has changed the approach to therapy.

Epidemiology

The epidemiology of peripheral arterial disease shows its widespread prevalence. According to studies, the incidence of PA among people over 50 years of age reaches 15-20%. The risks are significantly increased in patients with concomitant factors such as diabetes, hypertension and smoking. International studies show that the prevalence of this condition is growing due to the increase in the number of elderly people, which necessitates regular monitoring and understanding of the fight against the disease.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Data on genetic predisposition to peripheral arterial disease are currently still under active study. It is known that the presence of certain genes, such as those involved in lipid metabolism (e.g., APOE, LDLR), can increase the risk of developing atherosclerosis and, therefore, PAD. Mutations in these genes can lead to changes in lipid metabolism, which becomes a springboard to the development of the disease.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

Risk factors that contribute to the development of peripheral arterial disease can be divided into several categories:

Physical factors: age (over 50 years), gender (men are more susceptible), presence of concomitant diseases (hypertension, diabetes, obesity).

Chemical factors: smoking, high cholesterol, low physical activity.

Other factors: hereditary predisposition, vascular surgery, previous heart attacks or strokes.

These factors are interrelated and can enhance each other's effects, making prevention particularly important.

Diagnosis of this disease

Diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease is based on a combination of clinical, laboratory and instrumental studies.
