This syndrome is characterized by persistent dependence and occurs as a result of neuropsychological imbalance under the influence of opioids, which can include both legal drugs (e.g., painkillers containing oxycodone, hydromorphone) and illegal drugs (e.g., heroin). The disease manifests itself in the form of physical and psychological dependence, which can be accompanied by a variety of comorbidities, including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. The process of dependence can occur with short-term or long-term use of opioids, depending on the individual characteristics of the patient, as well as the type and dosage of the drug.

<div of the disease and interesting historical facts

The history of opioid addiction goes back centuries. Some of the first opiates known to mankind were poppy juice, from which morphine was isolated, and its derivatives. The ancient Egyptians used opium for medicinal purposes over 3,000 years ago. In the 19th century, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the increased availability of opiates, addiction began to spread. At that time, morphine was used as a painkiller, which led to its widespread use and subsequent abuse. The addition of insidious heroin, which was synthesized in 1874 and marketed as a safe alternative to morphine, only worsened the situation, eventually leading to the first opioid epidemic in the early 20th century.

Epidemiology

Opioid use disorders have reached epidemic proportions worldwide. According to the WHO, there were more than 11 million cases of opioid abuse worldwide in 2020, of which more than 1 million resulted in death. Statistics show that opioid use is increasing across age groups, but is particularly high among young people aged 18 to 25. The United States and Canada have seen a sharp increase in overdoses involving synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. The CDC estimates that opioid overdose deaths in the United States will exceed 100,000 in 2021, making this a pressing issue.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Research shows that genetic predisposition plays a significant role in the development of opioid use disorders. In particular, mutations in genes responsible for the metabolism and transportation of opiates have been found to increase the risk of addiction. Genes such as OPRM1, responsible for opioid receptors, and COMT, located in the dopamine system, may be involved in the pathological process. It is assumed that certain genetic variations affect the feeling of pleasure and the likelihood of developing addictive behavior when exposed to opioids. In the future, genetic research may lead to the creation of more effective methods of prevention and treatment.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

There are several risk factors that contribute to the development of opioid use disorder.
