The disease can lead to liver inflammation and fibrosis, which in turn increases the risk of developing cirrhosis and liver failure, as well as hepatocellular carcinoma. NASH has become an important medical and socioeconomic problem in recent decades due to the increasing incidence of obesity-related morbidity and metabolic syndrome. The clinical manifestations of NASH can range from asymptomatic to acute and chronic conditions requiring urgent medical attention.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_88 of the disease and interesting historical facts

The history of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis as a medical concept dates back to the late 20th century, when it began to be studied in more detail. In the 1980s, doctors noticed a link between obesity and liver disease, which raised new questions for the medical community. Initially, the condition was classified as “fatty liver,” but later a clinical spectrum began to be noted that went beyond simple fatty liver contamination. In 1999, the term “non-alcoholic steatohepatitis” was officially introduced, which made it possible to distinguish this condition as a separate nosology. Interestingly, similar manifestations were previously observed in people with diabetes, but it soon became clear that there are other factors that contribute to the development of the disease. Scientific research in the 2000s conducted an in-depth analysis of the pathogenesis of NASH, which made it possible to establish links between this disease and various metabolic disorders.

Epidemiology

The epidemiology of NASH shows an increasing trend of the disease spreading worldwide. According to global studies, it is difficult to identify exact figures, however, some studies indicate that the prevalence of NASH in the population ranges from 20% to 30% in developed countries. In people with obesity and type 2 diabetes, this prevalence can reach 70-90%. It is important to note that the disease affects not only the adult population, but also children, which has become one of the alarming trends of recent years. A publication by the World Health Organization (WHO) also suggested that the number of NASH cases will increase due to the global epidemic of obesity and inactive lifestyle.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

There is evidence that genetic predisposition plays a significant role in the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Studies have shown that certain genetic markers may increase the likelihood of developing NASH. Specific mutations, such as polymorphisms in lipid shunting genes such as PNPLA3, TM6SF2, and GCKR, are associated with fat accumulation in the liver. The PNPLA3 gene, which codes for lipase, is associated with more severe forms of steatohepatitis, increasing the risk of fibrosis. Research shows that carriers of risk alleles have a significantly increased risk of developing chronic inflammation and fibrosis.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

Risk factors for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis are varied and include both individual characteristics and behavioral aspects.
