This arrhythmia is typically seen in patients with various pulmonary pathologies such as chronic obstructive bronchitis or pulmonary emphysema, but may also be associated with other cardiac and non-cardiac diseases. The underlying mechanism of MAT is the occurrence of multiple abnormal impulses that activate the atria at a rapid rate, resulting in a significant increase in heart rate and potential complications such as heart failure or thrombosis.

<div of the disease and interesting historical facts

Multifocal atrial tachycardia was first described in medical literature in the mid-20th century. Research at that time focused on the relationship between this arrhythmia and lung diseases, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Scientific sources mention that MAT in patients with COPD can be caused by both the body's response to a hypoxic environment and fibrotic changes in the lungs, leading to changes in hemodynamic parameters. Since then, the concept of multifocal atrial tachycardia has expanded significantly to include aspects of pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment, which has allowed doctors to better understand and combat this complication in various clinical situations.

Epidemiology

Statistics of occurrence of multifocal atrial tachycardia indicate that in patients suffering from chronic respiratory failure, its frequency can reach 20%. According to modern studies, prevalence among the γενικού population varies within 1-2%. In women, the disease occurs somewhat more often than in men, which is associated with differences in the pathophysiological mechanisms of development of diseases predisposing to MPT. Due to the increase in life expectancy and improvement in the diagnosis of lung diseases, the epidemiology of MPT continues to be studied, which emphasizes the importance of early detection of patients for the appointment of senior therapeutic interventions.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Research data show that multifocal atrial tachycardia may have a genetic predisposition, but the exact molecular mechanisms have not yet been established. Cases of mutations in genes responsible for the electrophysiological properties of cardiomyocytes, such as the KCNQ1 and KCNH2 genes, have been described. These mutations can affect the function of ion channels, which in turn predisposes to the occurrence of arrhythmias. However, it should be emphasized that not only genetic factors but also conditions accompanied by hypoxia and changes in cardiac function have a significant impact on the development of MAT, which makes genetic research in this area relevant.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

There are several risk factors that contribute to the development of multifocal atrial tachycardia.
