Deficiency of this enzyme leads to the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in various tissues and organs, which causes progressive disorders in many body systems. Since the IDS gene is located on the X chromosome, this is due to the peculiarities of inheritance: boys get severe forms, and girls are often carriers with a possible mild course of the disease or without obvious symptoms.
