This form of the disease most often occurs as a result of metastasis of a primary tumor located in other organs, such as the lungs, breast, kidney cancer, or colorectal cancer. The main mechanism of formation of metastatic tumors in the pleura involves hematogenous or lymphogenous spread of tumor cells, which leads to the formation of secondary tumor foci. The main clinical manifestations of metastatic pleural tumor are pleurisy, dyspnea, chest pain, and systemic symptoms such as weight loss and weakness. Given the diversity of primary tumors and the reactive processes that occur in the pleura, metastatic pleural tumor requires a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.

<div of the disease and interesting historical facts

The history of the study of metastatic pleural tumors dates back to classical times, when ancient physicians first noticed the connection between tumors and pleurisy. In the 19th century, the studies of S. Cottle and R. Bigelow laid the foundation for understanding metastasis. This became a powerful impetus for further clinical and experimental research in the field of oncology. Particularly significant was the discovery in 1921 by the German pathologist Gustav Röchl, who described metastatic pleurisy as a result of the spread of cancer cells from primary foci. In the early 20th century, diagnostic and treatment methods began to actively develop, including radiography and surgical procedures, which significantly changed the approach to the treatment of metastatic tumors in the pleura.

Epidemiology

Metastatic pleural tumor is relatively common among patients with other cancers. According to the National Cancer Institute, metastatic pleural lesions account for approximately 10% of all pleural tumors. The most common primary sources are lung cancer, breast cancer, and malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. According to statistics, 50-65% patients with advanced end-stage cancer have evidence of metastatic pleural lesions. Despite advances in early diagnosis and improvements in medical care, survival from metastatic lesions remains poor worldwide, with a median survival time of 6-12 months.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Genetic predisposition to metastatic pleural tumor is currently being studied with increasing interest. Certain mutations, such as activating mutations in the EGFR, HER2, and KRAS genes, are associated with an increased risk of developing lung cancer and other malignancies, which in turn can lead to metastatic pleural lesions. Several studies, including meta-analyses, have shown that mutations in the TP53 and Rb genes are also associated with unfavorable prognostic factors in metastatic cancer. Thus, molecular genetic studies may play a key role in more accurate diagnosis and treatment of metastatic pleural tumors.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

Risk factors for metastatic pleural tumor are usually related to the primary malignancy.
