This type of tumor is characterized by an aggressive course and high metastatic capacity. Unlike other types of lung cancer, such as squamous cell and adenocarcinoma, LCLC develops from large cells, which determines the clinical and morphological features of the disease. Large cell carcinoma is often diagnosed at late stages, which is associated with low specificity of symptoms at early stages. The clinical picture includes clear respiratory problems, general malaise, weight loss and sluggish course of the disease, which together leads to difficulty in diagnosis at early stages.

<div of the disease and interesting historical facts

Large cell lung carcinoma was first described in the literature in the mid-20th century, when the attention of the medical community began to focus on the study of various types of lung tumors. In the 1940s, scientists identified the main morphological characteristics of LCC, which allowed them to better understand the mechanism of its development and progression. The popularity of LCC as a disease under study increased in the 1970s, when a link was found between smoking and increased incidence of mid- and large-cell lung cancer. Over time, LCC has become a better-studied tumor given the molecular changes that certain gene mutations lead to.

Epidemiology

According to the latest data from the World Health Organization, SCC accounts for 10-15% of all lung cancer cases, making it one of the most common forms of the disease among non-small cell cancers. According to statistics, the incidence of SCC reaches 3-8 cases per 100,000 population per year, with the highest prevalence among men over 50 years of age. According to research, the incidence rate increases significantly in settlements with high levels of air pollution and smoking. Forecasts show that the expected incidence will grow in the coming years, which requires enhanced monitoring and preventive measures.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Large cell lung carcinoma has a genetic predisposition.
