In the autosomal recessive form of this pathology, the disease is transmitted through recessive alleles, which means that two mutated copies of the gene, one from each parent, are required for the disease to manifest. Hydrocephalus can lead to significant neurological impairment and increased intracerebral pressure, which in turn causes a variety of clinical manifestations, such as an increase in head size, headaches, visual impairment, and cognitive impairment. Timely diagnosis and adequate treatment are essential to improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_85 counter-flat ez-toc-counter of the disease and interesting historical facts

Hydrocephalus has been known to mankind since ancient times. References to the condition can be found in historical records and medical texts, from Egyptian papyri to the works of Hippocrates. However, until the 20th century, hydrocephalus remained poorly studied and little understood. One of the first to describe surgical methods for treating this pathology was the Swiss neurosurgeon Victor Sasse, who in the 1930s began using ventricular shunts to reduce pressure in the brain. In more recent years, with the development of neuroimaging, it has become possible to better understand the mechanisms of hydrocephalus and its autosomal recessive form.

Epidemiology

Hydrocephalus in general has a prevalence of about 0.5-1 per 1000 live births. The autosomal recessive form is less common and has a more specific epidemiological picture. Statistics show that cases of autosomal recessive hydrocephalus are more common in certain ethnic groups, especially in populations with a high concentration of genetic abnormalities, where inbreeding may contribute to an increased incidence of such diseases. An example is cases in isolated communities, such as some private villages in the Middle East.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Autosomal recessive hydrocephalus may be associated with mutations in a number of genes.
