This disease is most often observed in newborns and mature men. The course of hydrocele is painless in most cases, but can be accompanied by discomfort, an increase in the volume of the scrotum and other symptoms that significantly affect the patient's quality of life. In this case, hydrocele can be both primary and secondary, which indicates the presence of other diseases or conditions that contribute to the accumulation of fluid.

<div id="ez-toc-container" of the disease and interesting historical facts

Hydrocele has been known in medical practice for many centuries. In ancient Egypt and Greece, medical texts describe cases similar to hydrocele. Hippocrates, for example, mentioned such conditions in his works, emphasizing the importance of observing symptoms and drawing conclusions about the origin of the disease. In the 18th and 19th centuries, hydrocele became the subject of more in-depth research, which led to the first description of modern surgical methods for its treatment. Today, significant advances can be noted in understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of this condition, as well as in the development of effective methods of therapy and diagnosis.

Epidemiology

Hydrocele is a common problem, especially among newborns and children. According to various studies, the prevalence of this disease among newborns reaches 1-3 %, while in 50-80 % of them, hydrocele can heal itself during the first year of life. In adulthood, hydrocele occurs with a frequency of about 1-2 % in the general male population. In addition, according to epidemiological data, this disease is more common in men with certain diseases, such as orchitis or scrotal injuries.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

There is some evidence that some genetic factors may influence the development of hydrocele. There is evidence that certain genes are involved, such as genes encoding proteins involved in the formation of spermatic cords and mesenchymal cells. In particular, mutations in the COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes, which are involved in collagen metabolism, may increase the risk of developing hydrocele. However, despite the current belief in a genetic predisposition, most cases are explained by environmental and physiological factors rather than genetic ones.

Risk factors for the development of this disease

The causes of hydrocele are varied and include both physiological and external factors.
