This pathology is usually diagnosed during prenatal ultrasound examinations, most often in the second trimester of pregnancy. Despite its benign nature, cystic hygroma can be associated with a number of anatomical and chromosomal anomalies, including Down syndrome, Turner syndrome and other genetic disorders. Involvement in this disease requires careful monitoring and an interdisciplinary approach to pregnancy management, which allows minimizing possible complications and ensuring the best outcomes for the fetus.

<p of the disease and interesting historical facts

Cystic hygroma was first described in medical literature in the early 20th century. One of the first cases was documented in 1913, when it became possible to visualize this pathology using X-ray methods. Over time, with the development of ultrasound technology, it became possible to detect cystic hygroma at earlier stages of pregnancy, which increased the likelihood of successful pregnancy management and reduced the risk of complications for mother and child.

Scientists note that attitudes toward this pathology have changed over the years. For example, in the early 2000s, several large studies were conducted that showed a link between cystic hygroma and various chromosomal abnormalities. This led to the further development of genetic counseling for future parents.

Epidemiology

Fetal cystic hygroma has an incidence of 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 7,000 live births. However, this rate may vary depending on the population and the method of detection. Research suggests that the incidence of cystic hygroma is particularly high among fetuses with chromosomal abnormalities, highlighting the need for more thorough diagnostic testing and possible prenatal screening.

It is important to note that the traditional diagnostic approach includes ultrasound and wave tomography, which has improved the reliability of detection and statistics on this pathology. The results of recent studies indicate an increase in the number of diagnosed cases as imaging methods improve.

Genetic predisposition to this disease

Cystic hygroma may be associated with a variety of genetic disorders, primarily chromosomal abnormalities.
